A renowned scholar of the Muslim World. He is a senior teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband (one of the world’s most prestigious seminary founded in 1866). Born on August 12, 1944 in a well-off nawab family at Mansurpur, Muzaffarnagar UP (India), completed his Islamic fazliat course from Deoband in 1965 and since then, devoted himself to serving the Qura’an and Hadith. It is a record that he has been lecturing Hadith in Darul Uloom Deoband for over 33 years. His lineage traces back to the Messenger of Islam صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم. He is son in-law of the great Islamic Scholar Shaykhul Islam Maulana Sayed Hussain Ahmed Madaniرح. Since 2008, he has been elected as the President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind for the fourth consecutive term. Under his presidentship, JUH has expanded its work in the multiple domains including revival of Deeni Taleemi Board and Department of Islamic jurisprudence. His wise decision and better understanding of the organization affairs has benefitted the about 100 years old organization.
Maulana Mahmood A. Madani
Maulana Mahmood Madani, a religious scholar and leader of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has distinguished himself over the years as the most vocal supporter of unity in diversity. It is this part of legacy that he inherited from his ancestor Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, the proponent of composite nationalism. Following in the footsteps of his fore fathers he does not only believe in but has been actively campaigning for ‘Hindu-Muslim unity’ echoing the message of Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani as he said in 1924 in his address to the Jamiat Ulama-i Hind conference, ‘Hindu-Muslim unity is a pre-requisite for [the] freedom of India.’’
He firmly believed that Muslim minority could be fully integrated, with complete social cohesion, within a majority non-Muslim community, without being considered as disloyal to their faith or disloyal to their compatriots. Thus Maulana Mahmood Madani is the modern day flag bearer of composite nationalism.
Born on 3rd March 1964, as per the family tradition, he first memorized Holy Quran, followed by Madrasa education, culminating into degree of Fadhil from Darul Uloom Deoband in the year 1992. That was the year when the demolition of Babari Masjid caused wide spread communal riots, bringing young Mahmood from the seminary out on the street, leading protest and organizing relief, an activity that became the hallmark of his character in the years to come. He is a passionate crusader against communalism.
On the political level he has been consistently campaigning for enactment of anti-communal riot bill in order to hold the law enforcement agencies accountable for incidence of communal riots and to compensate the victims uniformly and justly without any discrimination for failure of the state to protect the lives and property of its citizen. On the social front he has made it his lifetime goal to reach out to the victims of natural as well as man- made disasters purely on humanitarian grounds. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari we can find his stamp both on the land and hearts of the millions of devastated people whom he has helped to rehabilitate in the aftermath of earthquakes, floods, tsunami, tornadoes and above all the communal riots. The rehab colonies built in Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Seemanchal, Bihar and Kerala witness his zeal for humanitarian work benefiting the poorest of the poor and encompassing all communities without any discrimination providing the best example of social cohesion and harmony. His great humanitarian services in Gujarat aftermath of Gujarat communal violence spreading over building 35 colonies, schools, children villages, followed by consecutive work for 2005 Kashmir earthquake victims, 2012 Assam Communal Riot Victims, 2013 Muzaffarnagar riot victims, 2014 Kashmir floods, 2015 Chennai heavy floods, 2015 NEPAL EARTHQUAKE, North Gujarat floods, & now for Bihar flood victims have won him accolades in all sections.
His most important achievement is the role that he played in launching the anti-terrorist campaign through the width and breadth of the country. He has been instrumental in getting Fatwa passed by Deoband Clergy. Besides organizing about 40 anti-terrorism conferences all over the country, the massive public gatherings in May 2008 at Ramlila Ground of Delhi and in November 2008 at Hyderabad have helped in mobilizing Muslim Masses and Ulama against terrorism. In the wake of Paris attack in December 2015 he organized protest rally in 75 cities simultaneously declaring that terrorism in the name of Jihad is desecration of Islam.
He bravely spoke out against decades old injustice meted out to Kashmiri People while reiterating the fact that Kashmir was an integral part of India and equally Kashmiris were our brothers.
On December 13-15, 2013 he organized a three days International conference on the subject of World Peace Conference at Deoband and Delhi. The conference was the first initiative to establish reciprocal relations and prepare the positive strategies through mutual understanding, and cooperation. About 200 prominent ulama from world over mainly Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Maldives and UK etc. participated in this conference.
While raising his voice for the protection of the rights of minorities and to stop discrimination against them, Maulana Mahmood Madani has been emphasizing the legal recourse as the best option and to march along with the secular majority instead of taking to path of confrontation. He is often heard saying secularism is not a political option but it is the soul of India. It is not the gift of any political party or ideology. It runs in our blood.
He has been a member of Rajya Sabha no doubt but politics for him is incidental and serves only a means to obtain social justice for the oppressed people.
Two big movements under his leadership in the recent time
Currently he has attracted appreciation for leading Aman March in over 800 cities all across the country. This march was in backdrop of communally surcharged attacks on minorities and Dalits in the name of cow protection and bogey of love jihad. Besides that Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind under his leadership held protest against Israel and America in 1024 cities and towns.
They reflect his mighty organizational skills and leadership quality. Protests on such large capacity can be listed the first ever after the Quit India Movement (1942) and Anti-emergency campaign (1975)
Recently Maulana Madani has been named among top 50 influential persons worldwide by the international Research Center “Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (RISSC)” in consecutive nine terms.
Interestingly, he is the only Indian Deobandi Scholar who rode to this fame.
